Sure, the life of a graduate student wasn’t exactly glamorous, but it was Merit’s. She was doing fine until a rogue vampire attacked her. But he only got a sip before he was scared away by another bloodsucker–and this one decided the best way to save her life was to make her the walking undead.

Turns out her savior was the master vampire of Cadogan House. Now she’s traded sweating over her thesis for learning to fit in at a Hyde Park mansion full of vamps loyal to Ethan Sullivan. Of course, as a tall, green-eyed, four-hundred-year-old vampire, he has centuries’ worth of charm, but unfortunately, he expects her gratitude–and servitude.

But an inconvenient sunlight allergy and Ethan’s attitude are the least of her concerns. Someone’s still out to get her. Her initiation into Chicago’s nightlife may be the first skirmish in a war–and there will be blood.

Disclaimer: this is a reread

This is a reread for me, boy was it worth a reread. I’ve been wanting to reread this series since I finished it last year I think it was. Anyway, we’re following Merit in this book as she comes to terms with becoming a vampire, unwillingly.

Thrown into this world of vampire politics, along with the politics with other supernaturals or sups as used within the book. We get to watch Merit come to terms with who she is, she’s no longer human, she’s a new vampire. But she didn’t choose this life, like her “brothers” and “sisters”.

I actually first discovered this book in my library, as a total lover for all things supernatural, it caught my eye. So I borrowed it and the second book…what I borrowed on a risk of hoping it’d be awesome was right. I quickly fell in love with this world back in 2012, when I found them in my library.

I was 12 when I first read this, now 12 year old me wasn’t paying SUPER CLOSE attention to the details. She was there for the journey, the feels and the story. 6 years on, and I can confirm I still thoroughly love this book and will probably still love and shriek about the rest of the series.

Something that caught my eye this time around, was the ages of our characters, they’re late 20’s now at 12, I got it in my head that they were early to mid 20’s. Maybe down to how the characters acted? It’s stuck and even now, knowing Merit is actually 28…I still think of her as 23/24. Not a huge problem in one respect I guess, unless that sort of thing bothers you. For me, it didn’t ruin or detract from the story, as Chloe Neill is one of my favourite writers, for how she weaves her plots, characters and I’m already excited to reread the rest of these books.

If you’re after a book, with vampires, which is more than just your typical vampire book. More than the cliché human and vampire, but weaves a tale of characters lives, with the supernatural lives, add in murder, mysteries and finding yourself when who you were…is not you anymore. Try this book, Merit is one of my favourite characters!

SPOILER WARNING: Reading the discussion section, contains spoilers about the book, you’ve been warned. To get to the end of the post, skip down to see the purple dragon and diamonds.

It’s been a while, so I’d managed to forget who actually had been responsible for killing the innocent girls. *coughs* our favourite person ever Celina, also Amber is a piece of work do not like her. Nope. Traitor.

Catcher and Mallory….they amuse me as do Ethan and Merit. Like both couples have chemistry, difference is Catcher and Mallory are actually dating, whilst Ethan and Merit are…not. Cause we have the lovely Morgan courting her now, which I might add, made me chuckle when Ethan was like *take his hand, accept it*

It’d be easier if he just admitted, if the both just admitted their feelings and that he actually wants her…sorry needs her. As we already know he wants her body, *sniffs* The sarcasm between Merit and Ethan though always makes me chuckle, as does with Luc and Lindsay who I am shipping together so much already!

Also loving how Merit is Sentinel for the House hehe, as I’ve already read the series I can confirm, it gets better and more kick ass. With more mysteries, more character development, arcs, back stories and JUST SO MUCH AWESOMENESS.

Have you guys read this book? What did you think? Favourite character, let me know your thoughts in the comments below!

  1. I don’t think I’ve read a book with vampires in ages.. well, aside from Black Dagger Brotherhood. This might be a good book to get back into it. Especially seeing as the characters are my age 🙂

  2. Oooh what an interesting sounding book, and I am glad the re-read was as good as the first time! I am so afraid to revisit some beloved favorites after several years because I’m afraid I will hate them and be sad. Great review, and I skipped the discussion because I may read this one day!
