JJ’s Questions

If you could banish one romantic trope from fiction forever, what would it be?

Instant love. It annoys the hell outta me, two people don’t fall in love instantly, that’s not love. That’s lust and having an attraction to the other person physically not emotionally.

Name a book you loved that passes the Bechdel test.

The Spinster trilogy by Holly Bourne. Whilst a male is mentioned by the three girls, they don’t spend all their time talking about boys instead its about feminism and I love the series, it was an eye opener for me. Highly recommend all of Holly Bourne’s books to you, her writing is great and the topics she talks about are relevant.

Name a book that features a male/female friendship that doesn’t turn romantic.

Ummm not gonna lie I had to sit and think hard about this…and even harder because it’s just so hard. When you actually think about it so many books feature male and female friendships that turn to romance.

Not sure if this counts but it’s all I can come up with, Six of Crows duology by Leigh Bardugo. Kaz and Inej while they clearly like each other and there’s something there, it never turns romantic in the two books. They still end up still being friends…perhaps the one couple I would do pretty much anything for them to get together.

What’s the funniest book you’ve read?

I read a lot of books which feature great wit and sarcasm, as a sarcastic person myself I find sarcasm hilarious. Chicagoland Vampires by Chloe Neill, that series makes me laugh a lot. Love it as does The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa.

If you had to choose between reading only romance novels or only horror novels for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Romance. I’m not a huge fan of horror, I’d rather read romance than deal with horro haha.

What’s your favorite parent/child relationship in fiction?
What upcoming release are you most looking forward to in the second half of 2018?

I have three. A Kingdom of Ash by Sarah J Maas which is the finale in the ToG series and I need to reread that series to prepare and to read Tower of Dawn aaah. Queen of Air and Darkness by Cassandra Clare bk 3 in The Dark Artifices series – emotionally I may be ready to read it before I die. Maybe not then *cries* I’m not ready for my heart to be ruined.

And in June which soon than the other two, we have Cait @ Paper Fury’s debut coming out and I canny wait for this! A Thousand Perfect Notes sounds like it’s going to be wonderful and also ruin me. I’m game for that haha.

Who was one of your bookish crushes as a child?

Technically I’m still a child…I’m not adult just yet (will be soon though *quietly screams*) As a kid I was rather fond of Peter Pan…dunno why haha. Then when I was watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer with my mum from like 9 to about 12 (something like that we watched all 7 series) I crushed hard on Angel…then Spike came along and I was just in love xD

We also watched The Dukes of Hazard which I loved, such a good series and I crushed on Bo Duke. Both series mentioned were actually before my time though, still I loved them and they’re timeless.

What was the last book you stayed up all night to finish reading?

Oooo erm…probably Caraval which was a while back but yeah. I just wanted to finish it haha.

Name a love triangle that wasn’t so bad to read, actually.

WILL/TESSA/JEM I ship Wessa and Jessa equally love them both aaaah they’re from the Infernal Devices series though hehe.

My Questions

  1. A book which shows the ups and downs of a relationship, so there’s highs and lows and it’s not all just a high.
  2. A book where the romance aspect felt rather forced and would have been a better story without the romance
  3. Worst love triangle you’ve come across thus far?
  4. An OTP that the rest of the book community loved – that you just didn’t
  5. Love doesn’t cure all…a book where the love apparently cures everything (mental illness, eating disorder etc)
  6. A contemporary everyone and their dog seems to love, that you’d gladly burn
  7. A love song you can’t stand?
  8. Flowers and chocolates or books? Which would you rather have as a Valentines gift
  9. A book where the romance added to the story and the journey
  10. Favourite and least favourite love tropes?

  1. This is such a fun tag. 🙂 Instalove is definitely one I can do without. And I love it when books have good humor to go along with the seriousness- some of the really good urban fantasy series seem to strike that balance.

  2. Aww thank you for the tag!! I love your questions too so definitely going to put this in line to do. 😉 And eeeep YOU MENTIONED MY BOOK I’M SO HONOURED THANK YOU. ❤ (And I also cannot freaking WAIT for Queen of Air and Darkness and 1000% sure I'm going to end up crying for the rest of my life.😂)

I also wish boy/girl friendships were more common! I have read some great ones, like Simon from Simon Vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda has a great one and same as The Raven Cycle!!

    • Ah I can’t wait to read your answers hehe. OF COURSE I mentioned your book, I’m buzzing waiting for it come out so I can go buy it from Waterstones 😉 then I’ll shout about it for a while before I read it and have my heart destroyed hehe

Queen of Air and Darkness shouldn’t be coming out at nearly Christmas time, like it’s going to kill us all I can feel it xD

I’ve not read Simon Vs…I probably should I just…I’m wary about it but The Raven Cycle I need to reread cause I loved the series and I must reread it to review it 🙂

  3. Aw yay, I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂 I agree about instalove—I don’t mind instant attraction, but please don’t make it love! And I actually had no idea about the two Six of Crows characters; I haven’t read the duology but seeing how fans talk about them I assumed they were a couple at some point 😂

    • Haha no us fans are just desperately wanting them to be a couple so freaking bad like, it’s painful because aaaaah if you read the duology you’ll get the pain and heartache it’s so heartbreaking but I love that they didn’t get together in a way cause then it’d have felt forced
